Joyful Vamp in A 8-Sep-2001 03-feb-2006 + 10PM sudden burst of creativity for the electric guitar. record on track three. patch 71 (sysex dump), high gain, reverb, delay, neck pickup. 1:15AM go to bed! 04-feb-2006 * polish what came to me last night. track four. still needs work, but it feels 80% there. I have never played anything like it, though I approached this kind of stuff on Rob's CD. 05-feb-2006 * take four on the RG1570. I think I am happy enough with it until I get drums and keys in--Lord willing. 07-feb-2006 + Drums. * Bought the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas (VSC) to use DXi synth. No other way to render MIDI to audio. $20. fiddle with drum fills. technique: enter notes in piano roll window. use drum window and piano bar to familiarize with proper notes. Later: use piano in step-record mode. 10-Feb-2006 * I think, to control basic and fill drum volumes separately, they have to be on separate MIDI channels. Set basic to CH11 and edit the DXi. 14-feb-2006 + recorded 555. * through Behringer B-2 Pro. Cardioid, position 15 inches in front of and above 12th fret. Treble +2db. 22-jul-2006 + RG1570 - take 5 finally made an intro! not a great take, but at least it's saved. Saturday, December 23, 2006 (1:46PM) + add strings. * Pick a patch...basic strings: VSC DXi, GS mode, 47: String Enemble 1 -> 8: Orchestra (patch 49) Sounds just like the strings patch on the P120. * Got a good take. Edit in roll window. Copy-paste a little. + Re-do the electric guitar. * 8:59 PM Audio problem: M-Audio Delta 1010LT out 4 has only very low frequencies. Swap cables at card--follows card. Reboot--no luck. Wait! Control-panel->Bass Management->General Settings Is on. Switch off. Problem gone! Wow! That was close! I almost shipped this thing back to M-Audio!. Sunday, December 24, 2006 (10:38AM) - submitted a request at www.m-audio.com (ID = NA57888): what is the bass management tab? The Delta Control Panel has a tab that is not mentioned in the manual or the knowledge base. It is labeled "Bass Management." I had a problem that got me pulling my hair out: Out 4 had only low frequencies. After a lot of hassle, I noticed a radio button ON in the "General Settings" area. I wish I knew what this set of controls was all about. * Make a practice mix, fire_vamp_no_electric.mp3, to practice with. I need to review the patch and reacquaint with the feel. * I derived a patch (82: "Fire Vamp") from 71: "Overdrive 00:7". I reduced the modulation range on the delay level (10 to 30) and am using the pedal (FCB1010, bank 00, switch 7, exp A) to modulate delay in and out--it is part of the instrument and affects how I play, so I will have to record it. I can add chorus later if I like. - I tried the saturated tube last night, but it seems too harsh and doesn't do chords well. - Back up RP20 data RP20 Bulk Dump 24dec2006 All patches in user memory RP20 Syst Dump 24dec2006 utility settings (bank names, etc...) RP20 Patch 82 24dec2006 This patch. * trouble with the mega-riff. Add rim shots on quarters to the shaker track at max velocity. Cut shaker velocities in half, boost level. * 4:36 PM Got three takes in (6, 7, 8). Rim shots helped A LOT! * integrate 1 to 34 take 7 34 to 51 take 6 51 to 60 take 7 60 to 84 take 8 84 to end take 7 + The riff in movement three is carried by the bass and needs help from the strings. Enter notes via mouse in piano roll window (Ctrl-Shift-click). * 11:07 PM render fire_vamp_mix_a.mp3 Saturday, January 6, 2007 (12:46PM) * The riff is too high. Move down an octave, and eliminate the chords for better emphasis. - Copy-paste notes, pitch-transpose -12. - The main volume mysteriously changes to 98. Use MIDI monitor. It coincides with that of muted track 15. Change track 15--it works. No, it still controls. Move to channel 16. Done. - But now I am confused: where was the fader really at in the last mix I published? Settle on 113. - Drum fills too low. Bring up from 95 to 118. - Render fire_vamp_mix_d.wav -> fire_vamp_mix_d.mp3 and fire_vamp_no_elec.mp3
